Choosing a managed IT services partner is one of the most consequential decisions an enterprise technology leader makes. The wrong partner creates friction, risk, and hidden costs. The right one becomes an extension of your team.
Start with SLA structure. Look beyond uptime percentages to understand what happens when things go wrong. How are incidents classified? What are the response and resolution targets for each severity level? Are there financial penalties for missed SLAs?
Evaluate the escalation path end-to-end. When a P1 incident occurs at 2 AM, who responds? Is there a dedicated on-call rotation for your account, or does the provider use a shared NOC? Get specific about the first 15 minutes of a critical incident.
Security posture is non-negotiable. The provider will have access to your infrastructure, data, and credentials. Verify SOC 2 Type II compliance, review their access management policies, and understand how they handle your data at rest and in transit.
Cultural fit matters more than most RFP templates acknowledge. Schedule working sessions with the team that will actually manage your account — not just the sales engineers. Evaluate how they communicate, how they handle disagreements, and whether they proactively surface issues or wait to be asked.
